Hargeisa (HOL) - Somaliland authorities have said that an unplanned clash erupted on Monday between civilians escorting former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi and airport security forces at Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport.
The confrontation occurred as Bihi was departing for the United Arab Emirates, with officials noting that airport authorities had not been notified in advance of his travel plans.
“We told him that we respect and welcome him, and that the airport and ministry must be informed in advance of his future trips and his return. We will also ensure that the former president departs with the protocol he is entitled to,” Minister Fu’aad said.
Police spokesperson Colonel Abdiasis Sheikh Ismail said the clash occurred when civilians accompanying Bihi attempted to force their way into the airport, prompting a confrontation with security forces. He confirmed that the police chief has ordered the arrest of the soldiers who opened fire during the incident.
“The former president, His Excellency Muse Bihi Abdi, deserves respect and dignity. What happened today was a clash between airport security forces and civilians accompanying him,” the spokesperson stated.
He added that the police chief has referred the matter to a high-level police committee, which will conduct a thorough investigation.
This is the first reported physical confrontation between Bihi’s security detail and airport security forces. However, months ago, similar tensions were reported during another of his departures to the UAE.
