Lionel Messi and Inter Miami failed to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference semifinals in the MLS Playoffs 2024 this Saturday after losing the second leg of the quarterfinals against Atlanta United at the Mecerdes-Benz Arena.
Atlanta United came from behind to win 2-1 after the visiting team went in front in the first half when David Martínez opened the scoring in the 40th minute and it seemed like an easy task from there after a terrible error by the goalkeeper for this goal.
But in the second half with Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba playing at a high level to try and get a second win in the leg, it was Atlanta United who stunned Inter with a pair of late goals.
The comeback for force a third gameDerrick Williams tied the game in the 58th minute and then Xande Silva, at 90+4' made it 2-1 in the second game of this series in which whoever wins 2 of 3 games advances.
The series is all tied up at one win a piece as the first match between these two teams finished with the same score, but it was a victory for Inter Miami, so they will play again next Saturday in a third game tiebreaker.
The final game of the leg between Inter Miami and Atlanta United will be on November 9 at Chase Stadium at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and it is for all the marbles as nobody seems to have a real advantage in the series.
