Somali American Social Service Association awarded $1 million grant

Saturday June 22, 2024

ROCHESTER, Minn.- The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development is awarding $12 million in workforce development grants to organizations serving communities in need across the state.

One of those organizations is the Somali American Social Services Association, which received a grant of $1 million to fund and expand its workforce training programs for Rochester’s immigrant community.

According to Omar Nur, founder and director of SASSA, the money will help the program to fund skill training programs, English language interpreters for job seekers, and small business development courses, among other services.

Nur said SASSA is still working with its partners at Workforce Development Incorporated to find ways to best spend the new funding for its programs, but in the meantime the grant left him hopeful for future growth for his organization.
