Mogadishu (HOL) — A young man is in police custody after allegedly murdering his wife in a gruesome attack in Mogadishu’s Hamar Jajab district, leaving residents horrified and reigniting discussions about domestic violence in Somalia.
The accused, Abdirahman Mohamed Mahmoud, allegedly attacked his wife, Fowsiya Ali Haji Shirwac, in their home with a knife, delivering multiple stab wounds before fatally slitting her throat. Witnesses described the couple as having a heated argument before the violence unfolded.
Fowsiya, a mother to five young children, is remembered by neighbours as a dedicated parent whose life was cut tragically short. The motive for the attack remains unclear, though the suspect reportedly confessed, citing an inability to “control himself” during their dispute.
The latest incident follows a troubling rise in domestic violence cases across Somalia. Advocacy groups have pointed to deep-rooted societal challenges, including a lack of support systems for victims and limited enforcement of legal protections.
Earlier this year, another harrowing case shocked Mogadishu when Sayid Ali Moalin Da’ud burned his pregnant wife alive. Though sentenced to death by firing squad, Da’ud’s punishment remains unfulfilled, highlighting delays in the justice system that often fail victims and their families.
As investigations into Fowsiya’s death continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing the growing crisis. However, community leaders argue that systemic changes are urgently needed, including public education campaigns, accessible reporting mechanisms, and swift legal recourse for survivors.
