Wednesday August 21, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday focused on stabilizing the Hirshabelle regions following a gathering in Mogadishu.

The meeting was attended by Hirshabelle President Ali Gudlawe Hussein and members of both the Federal Government's Cabinet of Ministers and the Hirshabelle administration.

The Ministers discussed delivering essential services to areas recently liberated from al-Shabaab control and evaluating ongoing and future projects in these regions. Deputy Prime Minister Jama emphasized the government's commitment to providing basic services such as education, healthcare, clean water, and the construction of district administration and security facilities in liberated areas.

President Gudlawe, who recently toured several districts in Hirshabelle, particularly those freed from al-Shabaab, briefed the ministers on the current situation.

"I have travelled nearly 1,000 kilometres in peace. People's minds have shifted away from the terrorists, and I have seen firsthand the communities' needs and challenges," said President Gudlawe.

Over the past year, Somali government forces, supported by local militia, have captured several strategic areas in Hirshabelle and Galmudug States from al-Shabaab, following a significant military operation to dismantle the militant group's presence in the region.
