Sunday August 4, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Türkiye and the U.S. governments expressed deep sorrow and condemnation on Saturday following a terrorist attack in Mogadishu that killed 37 people and wounded 63 others.

The attack, carried out by al-Shabab, targeted popular restaurants on Liido Beach in the Somali capital on Friday evening.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry released a written statement, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of many lives and injuries caused by the terrorist attack yesterday in Mogadishu."

The ministry strongly condemned the "heinous" attack and extended condolences to the Somali people, emphasizing Türkiye's ongoing support for Somalia's fight against terrorism.

The U.S. embassy in Mogadishu also condemned the attack in the strongest terms. "We offer our condolences to the victims' loved ones and wish a quick recovery to those injured. The United States and Somalia have a common interest in advancing peace and prosperity. Our commitment to supporting Somali efforts to defeat al-Shabaab is unwavering."

The attack on Liido Beach is one of the deadliest in Mogadishu in recent times. The beach area has been a frequent target, with a six-hour siege on a beachside hotel in 2023 and several other assaults causing numerous casualties.
