Dhusamareb (HOL) - Al-Shabab militants launched an attack on a Somali military base on the outskirts of El-Lahalay, a recently liberated village in the Galgadud region, on Friday afternoon.Government officials have refrained from commenting on the attack, while the group claims to have seized control of the village. The group’s claim has not been independently verified.
According to local residents, both sides employed heavy weaponry, disrupting communication within the village. The extent of casualties remains unknown at this time.
The attack occurred hours after the president of Somalia’s Galmudug regional state, Ahmed QorQor, escaped a suicide bombing in Las-Ga’amey, a small village in the Mudug region. But two federal lawmakers wounded in the attack.
Lawmaker Abdisalam Haji Dhabancad said he and Senator Abdi Hassan Qaybdid sustained minor injuries when pieces of the wall fell on them after the blast.
The two federal lawmakers wounded in the attack were visiting the village to encourage government troops. Somali government forces and local militia recently liberated Las-Ga’amey from al-Shabab control.
