The fire destroyed shops in the market that sell second-hand clothes and the vegetable market, but the security forces and fire departments were able to control the fire.

Traders believed that the fire was caused by a tank from the market's electricity companies, but the fire's cause has not been officially confirmed.

The traders estimated that the fire destroyed property worth millions of Ethiopian Birr currency.

The market fire in Jigjiga on Wednesday was the latest in the Somali-speaking Horn of Africa.

Last April,  Waheen market, the largest in the self-proclaimed republic of Somaliland, caught fire, causing substantial damage estimated in the millions of dollars.

In late January, a massive fire also destroyed part of Mogadishu's Bakara market.
