Leaders of East Africa regional block approve Somalia's bid to join EAC

    Mogadishu (HOL) - The leaders of the East African Community (EAC) member states have formally embraced the report of the Special Committee on the verification of Somalia's application to join the regional bloc during the 21st Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State held in Bujumbura, Burundi on Wednesday.

    Following the approval, the heads of state have directed the EAC Secretariat and Council to initiate the necessary technical processes to join Somalia into the regional body officially.

    Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lauded the East Africa Communities' adoption of Somalia's application Verification report as a significant milestone in the steps leading to the finalization of the formal admission process.

    Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Daud Aweis Jama, said on Thursday that since assuming office in May of the previous year, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has prioritized establishing and strengthening regional and international ties.

    "We take great pride as a nation in that, in less than a year, the Federal Government of Somalia has earned the confidence of EAC member states and is now on its way to obtaining full member status. This is a significant achievement for both our country and the entire region," expressed the Minister of Information in a statement released on Thursday.

    Last July, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the 22nd Ordinary East Africa Community Heads of State Summit where he made another bid to join EAC.

    In January, a verification team made up of senior officials from the seven member states visited Somalia.

    Somalia's inclusion in this esteemed regional body will bring forth a range of advantages in terms of diplomacy, social integration, communication, trade, economy, and education, among others.

    Somali people in business will have the opportunity to engage in operations across all eight member states. In contrast, the Somali passport will incorporate the East African Community Passport Union, facilitating seamless movement for Somali citizens within the region.
