President Hassan Sheikh meets with Burundi Minister of Foreign Affairs

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Burundi's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Albert Shingiro, during a two-day visit to Mogadishu on Monday.

    Shingiro delivered a message and greetings from Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye to President Hassan Sheikh.

    The minister praised the Somali government for its recent successes in the war against Al-Shabaab and expressed his country's support for the people and government of Somalia.

    In response, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized his administration's determination to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two countries.

    Burundi is among the nations contributing troops to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which is presently reviewing and evaluating its performance in the region.

    A four-day meeting commenced on April 24, 2023, in Kampala, Uganda, with attendees from the African Union Commission, ATMIS Mission Headquarters, and other Troop Contributing Countries, including Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Somalia, as well as representatives from international partners.

    The meeting's objective is to assess the preparedness of the Somali Security Forces to assume security responsibilities from the African Union troops, including force generation and logistical support.
