President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud promises to focus on federalism in his second term

Thursday May 19, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud outlined that his government wants to ensure the security of the capital by developing robust and systematic intelligence and cooperating with anyone working with the federal government on security.

In an interview with VOA on Wednesday, Mohamud said that during his first 100 days in office, his government would focus on implementing security, political stability, and economic recovery and put the legal framework to achieve these objectives.

He added that they would pass essential laws for the country and focus on securing debt relief from the IMF and World Bank.

President Hassan Sheikh stated that they would reform the security structures and institutions to be improved based on the federal system.

"Our institutions are still structured in the framework of the central government, he said, adding that "We will now establish a thorough agreement between the federal and state governments to federalize essential institutions."

The new president explained that he would work towards establishing universal suffrage in Somalia at the end of his term. He said his administration would develop an electoral system that people could agree on, unlike the elected indirect process that elected him.

Mohamud was elected by Somalia's members of parliament on Sunday in the capital Mogadishu, defeating the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo.
