Puntland state unable to mark 4th-grade secondary school leaving exam

    Garowe (HOL) - Puntland state government Minister of Education Abdullahi Jama Hassan said they do not have the resources to mark the exams necessary to graduate from 4th grade.

    The Minister of Education made the revelation on Thursday while briefing the Puntland Parliament. He said that only 46% of school fees were collected, which was insufficient to complete the year-end examinations.

    The organizations that used to support Puntland in administering the exams have suspended their financial support, which was 40% of the total budget, according to Puntland's education minister.

    The funding shortfall will pose a significant challenge for the more than 5,000 high school graduates this year who need their exam results to enroll in post-secondary institutions.

    Among the four federal member states, Puntland is the only region that administers its own exams in lieu of the federal government’s national examination. Puntland students who successfully complete the examination process often travel to Mogadishu to receive their graduation certificates from the federal government.
