Garowe (HOL) - Puntland’s Ministry of Interior and Democratization, Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed Issaq, says that the resignation of the Chairman of the regional electoral commission and his deputy will not affect the successful implementation of the one-person, one-vote elections in the state.
The Ministry of Interior thanked Guled Salah, who stepped down as head of the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) on Sunday after two years of managing state elections.
Issaq commended Salah for his work in introducing 1PV for by-elections in Ufeyn, Qardho and Eyl. It marked the first time voters in Puntland elected their representatives directly for the first time since 1969.
Jama Hirsi Farah, TPEC’s deputy-chairman, also abruptly resigned on Monday.
The ministry said it plans to complete the remaining district elections as scheduled.
Meanwhile, the Puntland’s electoral commission, which convened an emergency meeting yesterday, elected an interim chairman and deputy chairman and said the commission's work would continue.
