Ethiopian ambassador in Kenya denies embassy is to close

Wednesday July 7, 2021

ADDIS ABABA (HOL) - Ethiopian embassy in Kenya has refutted media reports that it was up for closure as a cost cutting measure by the Federal Government in Addis Ababa.

A statement from the embassy in Nairobi dismissed the media reports as 'false and wild guess'.

"Ethiopian neighbouring countries such as Kenya remains to be the priority to Ethiopian Foreign Policy," the statement read in part.

Various media reports this week alluded to the closure of the embassy citing remarks by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in address to Parliament.

The Ethiopian PM told Parliament 30 embassies will be closed down to cut down operating costs in financing the country's foreign services.

The move follows economic challenges facing the Horn of Africa nation.

According to PM Abiy, Ethiopia has since suffered economic losses to the tune of $2.3 billion since the war in Tigray started late last year.

These loses however do not include loss of livelihoods, civilian deaths or freezes on economic activities as a result of displacements.
