Police nab four suspects in rape and murder of teenager as government pledges action

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somali government has condemned the gruesome rape and murder of a 19-year-old teenager in Mogadishu noting those behind the offense must be brought to book.

The Ministry of Human Rights said in a statement Saturday the murder and rape of Hamdi Mohamed Farah was an affront to the law and Islamic values.

“The Ministry condemns this horrendous crime in the strongest terms possible,” the statement read in part. “Violence against women and girls is not only a grace violation of our laws and cultural concepts of traditional laws on the protection of the vulnerable but also out constitutional and Islamic values.”

Meanwhile police said they have arrested four suspects in connection which the offence which has sparked uproar amid calls for Somalia to pass the Sexual Offense Act which has stalled in parliament since 2018.

According to a police statement, four of the suspects are already in custody awaiting trial. The victim’s aunt told journalists Hamdi had just cleared her exams and passed well in the recently released form four exams.

Her parents live in El-Buur but she had been living in Mogadishu with her aunt for about then years.

In a related development, angry residents in Waberi set fire on tires with unverified reports indicating one of the houses belonging to the accused men had been torched.
