NAIROBI (HOL) - Security forces repulsed an attempted Al-Shabaab attack at a telecommunication in the outskirts of Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya’s northeast Tuesday morning, police have said.
The National Police Service in Nairobi said in a statement the security forces killed two militants and recovered weapons during the 2.30 am attack.“At around 2.30am, at Saretho Centre, 25 km from Dadaab in Garissa County, police officers on patrol thwarted an Al-Shabaab attack and managed to neutralize two of the attackers and recovered two AK 47 assault rifles, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making materials and other crude weapons,” the statement read in part.
The police said the criminal gang had targeted a nearby telecommunication and in the process four innocent civilian lives were lost including a teacher and a small child.
The attack comes two days after Al-Shabaab attacked a joint Kenya-Somalia military base in Lamu, Kenya killing three American soldiers.
US Africa Command said Monday it had deployed the East Africa Response Force (EARF) at Manda Bay, Kenya, Jan. 5, to augment security to secure the airfield after an attack by al-Shabaab terrorists.
