MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somalia has today released its Initial State Party Report on the rights of children 35 years after such a report was published in line with the global Convention of the Rights of Children.
The Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development released the report Monday which captures the actions taken by the government in domesticating the Convention two years after the Horn of Africa country ratified the CRC.“After facing a 35 year backlog this is yet another milestone, and important step in re-integrating Somalia into the regional and international human rights system,” a statement from the Ministry read in part.
The government noted the release of the report in line with the CRC requirements ‘demonstrates the commitment and determination as a Federal Government to fully participate in the promotion and protection of human rights both at home, and on the world stage.’
The report consists of data collected from consultations with state and non-state actors in Federal Member States and the Benadir region.
The report outlines detailed actions the government has taken towards the domestication of the convention.
The results of the report prompted the Ministry to initiate the drafting process of the Child Rights Bill in 2017, which forms a strong legal framework for protecting children in Somalia.
Somalia became the 196th nation to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 2017 and a year later was elected to the UN Human Rights Council.
