St. Paul city council picks interim member for Dan Bostrom seat

Friday January 18, 2019

The St. Paul City Council will vote on a resolution next week to name Kassim Busuri as the interim council member representing Ward 6.

If the resolution passes — as it is expected to — Busuri will serve out the rest of former council member Dan Bostrom’s four-year term following his unexpected retirement on Dec. 31.

Busuri is director of the Minnesota Dawah Institute, an Islamic community organization located in St. Paul.

Busuri also served as coordinator of the Community Ambassadors of the City of St. Paul Downtown in which he worked to help at-risk youth overcome challenges of homelessness, unemployment and access to education. And he is on the advisory council for the St. Paul chief of police.

Last month, Bostrom announced his retirement from the council after representing his East Side ward since the 1990s.

Busuri’s interim term ends Dec. 31, 2019. The 6th Ward seat will be permanently filled in the November general election.

After receiving applications for the interim position, council members interviewed six finalists Wednesday. The position pays an annual salary of $64,600 plus benefits.“I am humbled for the opportunity to represent Ward 6 residents,” Busuri said in a statement. “I will work hard to continue revitalizing the Eastside.”

In a statement, council president Amy Brendmoen said she and fellow council members “are looking forward to working with Mr. Busuri.”
