MOGADISHU (HOL) - The president of Somalia’s Hirshabelle State reappointed former Hiiraan region’s governor to lead the central region, replacing the region’s current governor who held the post for just five months.

In a decree issued on Saturday evening, president Mohamed Abdi Ware has appointed Yusuf Ahmed Hagar (Dabaged) as the governor of Hiiraan region, the third time he was appointed for the same position.

Mr. Hagar who has served as a minister in Hirshabelle State before his reappointment as the region’s governor becomes the first official to be appointed for the region’s governorship position for three times.

He succeeds Abdullahi Ahmed Maalin (Sufurow) who has been appointed for the position five months ago following the controversial sacking of his successor Ali Jeyte who refused to vacate the seat for weeks, before an intervention by local elders that marked the end of the crisis that threatened to spark a clan rivalry in the region which at the time was facing humanitarian crisis triggered by flashfloods in the provincial capital Beledweyne.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods that have displaced over 50,000 residents from their homes in the town and devastated large croplands earlier this year started after Shabelle river broke  its banks following heavy downpour in Hiran region and parts of Somali region of the neighbouring Ethiopia.
