Kenyan Security team nets contraband goods in Daadab, several lorries impounded

North Eastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik has cautioned businessmen and transporters against engaging in illicit trade.

Birik said the government will not entertain anyone who engages in illegal businesses especially smuggling of contraband goods.

He spoke in Dadaab sub-county on Friday where he had gone to inspect a consignment of contraband goods from Somalia.

For the last two weeks, security apparatus have impounded and confiscated more than 15 lories carried contraband goods across the region.

On Wednesday the owners of contraband sugar in three trucks in Wajir were fined over Sh1 million in total.
Two of the trucks with Somali registration number plates have their cases still pending in court.

“Some of these contraband goods that include mostly sugar, cooking oil and rice could have expired, counterfeit or are not fit for human consumption,” Birik said.

He said a team a multi-agency team that include KRA and KEBS officials has been formed to steer this war on contraband goods.

Birik said over 15 trucks have been nabbed in the past two weeks.
