Kenya-Somalia border wall workers killed in explosion

Three people died on the spot and 2 others were seriously injured on Monday morning when a civilian vehicle they were travelling in stepped on a land mine.

According to Mandera East OCPD Daniel Chacha, the victims who are boarder wall workers were clearing a road along the security wall when the incident happened at 10 am. their bodies were airlifted to Nairobi where their next of keen will pick them.

The team was headed to their work station when the device exploded.it was not clear whether they were accompanied by security officers. the police boss refused to comment promising to do so later.

“Its true there was an attack today in the morning and some lives have been lost. let me get back to you with more information later,” said the police boss. he had however not done as promised by the time of filing the story.

It is suspected the militants planted the device on Sunday night. they have since claimed responsibility through Radio Onduras that is associated with them.

The incident is likely to cause panic among the workers who have been assisting the KDF officers in the construction works.

Elwak MP Kulow Ali condemned the incident and urged the police to reinforce security especially along the boarder where the militants are likely to carry out attacks before sneaking back.

The wall whose progress has been slow was meant to stop incursions from the militants who had made a habit of crossing over to Mandera town from the near by Bula hawa town, carry out attacks before crossing over back to their country.

Recently the government redeployed former RC Mohamud Saleh to Harambee house and replaced him with Mohamed Birik who was until his promotion the county commissioner Kirinyaga.
