Fire at a Kuala Lumpur Islamic school kills 25 students

KUALA LUMPUR (HOL) - At least 25 people have been reported killed in a predawn fire at a religious school in Kuala Lumpur early Wednesday morning, according to fire and rescue authorities.

"The number of confirmed dead are 23 students and two wardens," Khirudin Drahman, director of Kuala Lumpur's fire and rescue department told AFP.

The fire early morning is believed to have begun at around 5:15 am (local time) in at the top floor of Pusat Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah religious school in Jalan Datuk Keramat. The fire spread quickly and quickly engulfed the three-story building. 25 people including students and teachers are reported killed in the fire and the wounded have been rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

“Based on our information at the moment, 25 pupils and wardens have died in the fire. ” Fire and Rescue Department spokesman was quoted as saying in local reports.

Firefighters raced to the scene where they remain battling the flames and continuing rescue operations.

"Our personnel are still at the scene.”

In 1989, a blaze in Kedah claimed the lives of  27  students at an all–girls school.



The fire is said to have begun at 5:15 am (local time) on the top floor of the three-story building.
