12 police officers killed as Al-Shabab attack vehicles in Mandera

Tuesday November 7, 2017

NAIROBI (HOL) -Over twelve Kenyan police officers were killed and several others injured after they were attacked by Al-Shabaab militants near Kenya's border with Somalia.

The militants launched the attack on two police vehicles escorting a bus heading to Kenya's capital Nairobi.

The attack occurred on Monday noon  between Dhabacity and Borehole villages.

According to Hassan Gudow Ali, a resident in Dhabacity, the officers were travelling in two land-cruiser vehicles which hit RPGs fired by the militants.

“Both the Land-Cruisers have caught fire, over 12 soldiers confirmed dead,” said Ali.

Ali said the rescue teams dispatched from Mandera town reached the scene.

Al-Shabaab militants have in recent months targeted police vehicles escorting passenger's buses plying in the region.  Kenyan troops entered Southern Somalia in 2011 to fight Al'Shabaab insurgents, later joining AU forces
