Woman and Human Rights Minister announces launches selection process for Human Rights Commission

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali Minister for Women and Human Rights Development, Deqa Yasin, began the selection process for the National independent Human Rights Commission on Sunday.

In her announcement, Deqa Yasin has said that Somalia must prioritize Somalia’s human rights framework.

“All people in Somalia must take note of this historic day and learn about the positive influence this independent body can have in their daily lives! Despite the many challenges faced by Somalia, whether it relates to the ongoing insecurity, poverty or the severe drought situation, strengthening the institutional human rights framework is one of Somalia’s key priorities moving forward.” said Minister Deqa.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development (MoWHRD), the Technical Selection Panel (TSP) will be in charge with “developing the architecture of the selection process”. The TSP will be made up of representatives from Federal Member States, civil society organizations and relevant stakeholders and creating in collaboration with the MoHRD. The entire process must be done in accordance with the Human Rights Commission Law (HRC Law). Prospective members of the National Independent Human Rights Commission will be interviewed if they make it to the second phase of the vetting process.

The MoWHRD has promised that the selection process will be “inclusive, fair, transparent, credible"
 and “open to the public and all who wish to apply for the honourable position of Human Rights Commissioner”.
