Mogadishu (HOL) - Residents of Merca town in Lower Shabelle have reported clashes between rival clans in the town on Saturday.

Clan militia’s fought in the port town over power sharing and control of resources in the area. A source on the frontline of the battle told HOL that although the exact numbers of deaths are still unknown, both sides have suffered casualties.

Merca, the capital of Lower Shabelle is a strategic town because of its lush farmlands and access to a port. It has been the scene of bloody battles between rival clan militias in the past. Government forces recently ousted Al-Shabaab from the city.

The warring sub-clans agreed to come up with an action plan on reconciliation and peace building following the signing of a ceasefire agreement in July 2016, the fragile detente has led to sporadic violence in the region.
