A woman working for the polio vaccination campaign in Somalia has been shot dead by unidentified assailants in the War-Dhigley district in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

The assassination of the female health volunteer was carried out by three men armed with pistols as she was walking near the Florenza junction in the Harar-Yale neighbourhood on Tuesday.

The brutal assassination against the polio vaccination staffer was confirmed to the media by her son, a journalist working for one of Mogadishu-based radio stations.

Monday’s assassination happened under tightened security, as Security forces launched a sweeping crackdown across Mogadishu. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the murder.

The killing coincides with a widespread polio vaccination campaign under way in the Banadir region and the rest of the country in a bid to eradicate the disease.
