Residents in possession of illegal firearms in the volatile Mandera County have until Wednesday to surrender them voluntarily or face the full wrath of the law.
Inspector general of the police David Kimaiyo gave the ultimatum when he toured the region where five people including a police officer lost their lives as a result of inter-clan fighting.
This comes amid tension in Busia and Bungoma counties after leaflets were distributed warning residents of further attacks.
Kimaiyo’s ultimatum comes only hours after a daring daylight attack on a police station where gunmen shot dead a police officer leaving another with severe gunshot wounds.
A number of residents have welcomed the move accusing raiders from the Ethiopian side of the border of aggression.
Already the military and a contingent of police officers are on standby at the porous border region to launch an exercise aimed at restoring normalcy.
Meanwhile, a section of leaders affiliated to the cord coalition led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga attributed the Busia and Bungoma attacks to politics and called for thorough investigations to ensure perpetrators of the violence are brought to book.
In another incident of deterioration security, a Transitional Authority official in charge of Nairobi county was today shot dead near his home in Tena estate Nairobi.
Eliud Baraza was leaving his house at around 6:00am when three gunmen who had laid an ambush on him sprung shooting him and taking valuables in his possession.
The Authority chairman Kinuthia Wamwangi and Nairobi County governor condemned the killing and called for thorough investigations into the murder.
