President Uhuru Kenyatta who is currently in London, UK has made a passionate appeal to the international community to take a decisive action and resettle Somalia refugees.He told the conference on Somalia that Kenya will support the
repatriation and resettlement of Somalia refugees most of whom reside in
Kenya
“As a country, we continue to host the largest population of Somalis outside their country,”President Kenyatta said
He
told world leaders attending the conference that presence of large
numbers of refugees was creating a humanitarian crisis not only in Kenya
but the East African region as well
He further reaffirmed the
position taken recently by IGAD Summit that called the international
community to develop modalities for safe and orderly return and
settlement of Somali refugees with definite timelines.
The
President acknowledged that securing peace in Somali was crucial for the
return of refugees and urged the international community to expand it’s
support to AMISON
He appealed to the World Bank, African
Development Bank and other international institutions to create
conducive environment for the stabilization of Somalia
Kenyatta
reaffirming his government support for a secure a stable Somalia saying
the conference on Somalia was the beginning of a new partnership with
the war ravaged nation.
President Kenyatta later held discussions with Somalia Head of State Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the sidelines of the meeting.
British
Prime Minister David Cameron disclosed that Britain would commit
10Million Sterling Pounds to help develop Somalia’s armed forces and
another 14.5 million Sterling Pounds to double the number of police
officers and train judges and lawyers.
He assured the conference
that his administration would help drive the country from emergency to
recovery and from recovery to development and reconstruction.
