Somali media organisations announced Monday (March 4th) the launch of a campaign against the jailing of journalist Abdiasis Abdinuur Ibrahim for six months for interviewing an alleged rape victim.

Representatives from print, radio, television and online media gathered in Mogadishu to make a collective statement against Ibrahim's conviction in a summit organised by the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and hosted by Somalia South-Central Non-State Actors, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.

"We have agreed to join forces and write a letter stating our concerns and demanding the release of our colleague to the president, prime minister and the speaker, which will be signed by both the media employees and NUSOJ," said NUSOJ Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim. "We also agreed to launch extensive daily media coverage, a media campaign focusing on the release of the journalist, the verdict, media freedom and freedom of expression."

Last month, Ibrahim was sentenced to one year in jail for offending state institutions, but that was reduced to six months by an appeals court on Sunday.
