Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon visited Baidoa Monday (July 8th) to conduct a security assessment and hold talks with local leaders on plans to remove al-Shabaab from the entire Bay region, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

Shirdon was accompanied by the ministers of defence and trade, members of parliament and top government officials.

Although Somali and Ethiopian forces liberated Baidoa from al-Shabaab in February 2012, the militant group still controls villages in the region.

This is Shirdon's first visit to Baidoa since he was appointed prime minister in October.
