35 killed in Mwingi road crash

At least 35 people were on Wednesday morning killed when a bus they were travelling in rolled at Tulimani area near Mwingi town along Nairobi-Garissa highway.
The bus was ferrying passengers to Garissa and Mandera in North Eastern when the driver lost control.Traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru said the accident occurred at about 3 am and that at least 50 other passengers were seriously wounded.
“The death toll may increase because there were serious injuries following the accident. Those who were injured are undergoing treatment in hospital,” he said.
He said 11 died on the spot while 24 others died while being attended to in a nearby hospital.
Survivors told police that the bus was overloaded and some of the passengers were as seats were full.
Mwingi OCPD Kipkemboi Birir said the rescue efforts were hampered because the bus was badly damaged.
“There were many people who were trapped in the bus and it took time to rescue them from the wreckage,” he said.
