An attorney for a Chicago man awaiting sentencing on terrorism-related charges says his client was allowed to leave jail to visit his ailing mother.

Court documents unsealed Monday say Shaker Masri's mother was in intensive care at a Chicago hospital. A defense filing says Rihawi Zainab was diagnosed with advanced cancer and wasn't expected to live long.

Defense attorney Thomas Durkin confirms Masri saw his mother Friday.

The emergency request was granted last week. The judge's order says marshals would accompany Masri and he would be shackled.

The 28-year-old was arrested in 2010 after the FBI exposed his alleged plot to attend a Somalia training camp to become a suicide bomber for the terrorist groups al-Qaida and al-Shabab.

He pleaded guilty in July and will be sentenced in December.
