Somalia on course to end transition

The Constituent Assembly conference has been convened in Mogadishu, bringing together 135 traditional elders to decide the selection of the assembly that will adopt a constitution and a new parliament for Somalia.

The new constitution once approved will see Somalia have a permanent government and a reformed parliament.

Several lawmakers attended the event and welcomed the process terming it as a great victory for the current transitional government that, amid fighting Al-Shabaab, has managed to draw up a new constitution for the Somali people.

The well-attended ceremonial day featured the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament, who received the elders with enthusiasms and praised their leadership.

Government Spokesman told Press TV that the conference also signifies the commitment of the signatories of the Roadmap, especially in the agreement to end the transitional period in time and called on the elders to make wise decisions and usher Somalia into a new constitution with a clear political dispensation.

The current transition government has spent almost three years trying to dislodge al-Shabaab from major towns in Somalia. This, as the lawlessness has also spread even in the sea, with organized armed pirates threatening the maritime industry by hijacking merchant ships. However, Somali government is of the view that putting an end to lawlessness and piracy in Somali only depends on the enactment of a new constitution and a permanent Somali government, which is due to take power in August.
