President Yoweri Museveni has said Uganda is ready to support Somalia as the troubled country nears an end to the transition period that will see a new parliament and president elected on August 20.

The President was on Wednesday meeting the UN special representative on Somalia, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, at State House, Nakasero.

Ambassador Mahiga was briefing President Museveni on the situation in Somalia as the country nears the end to the transition period.

"The road to this has been bumpy with too many tasks to be accomplished. However, it is good for the region to know that Somalia is heading for a new government," he said, according to a press release from State House.

The UN-endorsed roadmap, if successful, will result in the formation of a new Somali government.

A conflict resolution committee comprised of 25 traditional clan elders will this week pick 275 members for the new parliament, who will choose a new president on August 20 (Monday).

According to a roadmap agreed by the country's main political groupings in September 2011, the TFG's term ends on August 20.

State House said Ambassador Mahiga hailed the role of AMISOM in Somalia and said it is well prepared and adequately deployed in Somalia in case of violence during the election of the president.

He said the election is going to be tough and competitive.

Mahiga hailed the president, speaker and various leaders in Somalia for working hard to prepare the people for the elections.

He also congratulated Uganda for attaining a Gold medal at the recently concluded Olympics in London.
