First batch of peace keeping police leaves for Somalia

Uganda has sent the first contingent of police officers on a peace keeping mission to Somalia yesterday.

The first batch of 56 police officers has been flagged off at Entebbe Air port by the Assistant Commissioner of Police at the National Central Bureau of Interpol, Martin Amoru .

The second batch is expected to leave tomorrow.

A contingent of 140-police officers were early this week commissioned to go to Somalia on the peace mission.

This makes Uganda the first country to send police officers to the war torn country.

The unit will be charged with keeping law and order, VIP Protection, community policing within specific areas in Mogadishu.

Amoru says the officers have undergone thorough training to ensure execution of their mandate.

The deployment of the officers comes two months after a memorandum of understanding was signed between government and the African Union Mission in Somalia.

Uganda has 5000 soldiers deployed in Somalia, alongside troops from Kenya, Burundi, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
