The minister said that the current situation in Somalia cannot be addressed solely by an institution or an individual but rather a collective responsibility.
The minister was speaking when he met with the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, who paid him a courtesy call in his Nairobi office.
During their discussions, Wetang’ula noted that there was broad consensus that the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia requires.
He urged the envoy to impress on the UN and other key partners to provide the necessary equipment and facilities to the Somali government. The minister also emphasized on the need for dialogue and assured the envoy that the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will endeavor to forge consensus between the TFG and the opposing forces.
Mahiga said Kenya has done a lot to support peace in Somali and promised to oversee a more proactive, consultative and improved partnership during his term as the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Somalia.
Last week, the UN envoy announced increased presence of UN agencies inside Somalia.
He said that within the next few months, the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) would have increased numbers of international and national staff based in Garowe, Puntland and Hargeisa (Somaliland) to join the national staff from his office who are already there.
