Cops are now hunting for a suspect in the shooting that broke out in the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Centre in the 1300 block of 28 St. S.E. shortly after 3 a.m.
When police arrived they found one man dead, another wounded inside the reception hall and a third with minor injuries in an adjacent field.
Another party guest called police at 4 a.m. from 16 Ave. and 19 St. N.E. saying he too had been shot.
The dead man is being identified by friends as 20-year-old Abdullah Hussein, who also went by the nickname Stylez.
Carrie Francis, a friend of the deceased, told the Sun Hussein's mother and brothers are mourning his loss.
"This young man was one of a kind and a great friend to have," she said. "He was true to his word and real. He will be very, very missed by all his friends."
Friends posted tributes on Hussein's Facebook page, saying he was "killed too soon" and will "never be forgotten."
Peter Nugent, president of the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Association, said the hall had been rented out for a small wedding reception, but when police arrived they found the place packed.
One witness, who did not want his name used, said the party, called "Boustier and Stilletos" put on by Sophie Productions, was just about to wrap up when he saw a group of people appear at the door followed by a bright flash of light and then he saw a wounded man, believed to be the one who died, on the ground.
"I asked if he was OK and he said 'I'm OK, I'm OK,'" the witness said, adding he believes the victims were shot from the exit door.
DJ Glen, who was playing music at the party, said after hearing gunshots people ran for cover.
"We just heard the shots and everybody scattered -- everybody just tried to escape and tried to get out," he said.
"People were screaming. I just tried to cover myself."
Insp. Keith Pollock said police don't know whether the victims were targeted, knew the gunman or were innocent bystanders.
"All we know for sure is there was possibly some kind of a verbal confrontation that obviously turned violent," he said.
District officers and the gang unit are assisting the investigation.
