Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern at the difficulties facing the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia, noting in particular the resignation of a number of cabinet ministers and its impact on the ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts.In a communiqué issued here Monday, following the Council's 146th meeting, it appealed to the Somali leaders to show unity of purpose and take all steps required to enhance the cohesion of the transitional federal institutions.
Unity of purpose, according to the PSC, is vital for consolidation of the progress made following the Djibouti Agreement of 9 June 2008 and facilitation of its early signature and implementation.
Also, Council expressed appreciation for the efforts being made by the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to support the implementation of the Djibouti Agreement.
Meanwhile, the PSC has called on the UN Security Council to fully assume its responsibilities by authorising the early deployment of a UN peacekeeping operation that would take over from AMISOM.
The Djibouti Agreement calls for the establishment of an international stabilisation force in the Horn of Africa country.
Condemning attacks perpetrated by armed elements against AMISOM and humanitarian workers, the PSC said that all acts of violence aimed at undermining the ongoing process in Somalia furthered instability in the region as a whole.
