Resettlement of 15 asylum seekers in US

A group of 15 asylum seekers from Somalia who arrived in Malta as irregular immigrants, have been allowed to settle in United States.

US Ambassador Molly Bordonaro described this resettlement “as part of a programme that will see hundreds of recognised refugees in Malta resettled in the US.

Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said this programme show the US support to ease Malta’s burden posed by the migrants’ influx.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees referred more than 260 people who are in process of being re-settled in the US. Some of them will leave the island in the coming weeks.

All seekers will be assigned to an agency that will be help them settle down by providing them housing, food, clothing and employment services for the first two years.

The fifteen refugees will leave Malta tomorrow. The departure is the first phrase of an operation expected to help more refugees who had arrived in Malta in recent years is being arranged by the International Organisation for Migration.

The final destinations of the 15 Somali are the States of Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Texas and Washington.

The US Resettlement programme is the largest programme of its kind in the world, with about 50,000 refugees resettled every year in the country.
