Mogadishu - Clashes between Islamist insurgents and Ethiopian troops in the Somali capital left two Ethiopian soldiers and seven civilians dead, residents said.

The bodies of the civilians were recovered in the Towfiq neighbourhood of northern Mogadishu after the night-time clashes.

Mohamed Bashir, an elder in Towfiq, said he had seen the bodies of five men who had been shot in a garage. Hassan Adan Suge, a nephew of one of the victims, confirmed he took other bodies away from the scene.

Residents said two Ethiopian forces were killed and several wounded in overnight 211oct22a.jpgclashes with insurgents who ambushed a patrol in the hostile neighbourhood.

Islamist militants, who were ousted from Mogadishu and other strongholds this year by Ethiopia-backed government forces, have carried out near-daily attacks in Mogadishu.

Somalia has been torn apart by conflict since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre set off a prolonged power struggle that has left tens of thousands dead.
