NAIROBI - Gunmen killed three people in a volatile district on the Kenyan coast near the border with Somalia, police said yesterday, as violent attacks surge ahead of December elections.
Police commander Ngatia Eregi said the attackers had raided an isolated village in Tana River district, killing the trio and stealing nearly 400 livestock, the state-run Kenya News Agency reported.
"The attackers are believed to be members of one of the warring community since some its members had (previously) caused mayhem at a political rally," he said.
The killings bring to 12 the number of people killed in the district in the last year.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, who plans to seek a second and final term in December, has vowed to crack down on crime.
