CARGO airline Astral Aviation, from Kenya, has resumed charters into war-torn Somalia with effect from 1 June 2007. The decision to resume charters into Somalia after one year was due to an overwhelming response for humanitarian and relief cargoes into Somalia. According to USAID reports, an estimated 90,000 people have been displaced from the capital Mogadishu following the recent fighting in Somalia. An increase in piracy off the coast of Somalia has hampered sea-shipments for various aid organisations, hence making it a logistical challenge for relief shipments.
Astral Aviation will offer charters based on five tons payloads on Fokker 50 and Hawker Siddley 748 aircrafts from its homebase Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya to various destinations in Somalia including Mogadishu, Baidoa, Jowhar, Belet Weyne, Hargeisa and Bossaso.
