UN Sec Gen Worried by Somali Situation

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon
United Nations, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed his concern Thursday for the increase of combats in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and particularly for the use of heavy artillery and tanks in populated areas.

A statement published by spokesman Farhan haq said that Ban Ki Moon is deeply impressed for the intensification of the confrontations in Mogadishu.

Moon regarded the new events as dangerous and said they have the potential to break the process of peace.

He called all the parts to put an end to the struggle and stop hostilities, something that it was agreed last week.

The statement reiterated that a lasting peace in Somalia can only be obtained through a dialogue leading to a political solution and national reconciliation.

Ethiopian troops came to Somalia in December in rescue of the Somalian interim government, which was about to collapse, because of the attacks of Islamic militias.

According to the program the Ethiopian forces will be replaced by a contingent of 8,000 soldiers from African countries with no borders with Somalia.

An advance of 1,700 Ugandan soldiers is already in Somali national territory.

The UN High Commisionner for Refugees said Thursday the increase of the number of people running away from confrontations went over 12,000 this week, for a total of almost 60,000 since February.
