As heavy fighting broke out in Adado north of Mogadishu, hundreds of families began fleeing the capital after Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi threatened new attacks in the city.
The scene Wednesday became especially brutal as furious Mogadishu crowds reportedly mutilated the bodies of dead Ethiopian troops and the soldiers of Somalia's transitional government, both reported widely reviled by capital residents.
The International Herald Tribune quoted witnesses as saying the corpses, and a few men still alive, were dragged through the streets and set on fire.
Shabelle Media Network reported that one of its reporters called to the Mogadishu airport for a news conference and his driver were arrested.
