The role of human rights defenders must be recognized and respected by the new authorities. They are vital to build a human rights culture to protect all citizens - particularly the vulnerable categories of women, minorities and children – and support
their rights and freedoms.
Every Somali understands well the meaning of the basic human rights to life, physical integrity and security of livelihood, since all have experience of human rights violations against themselves or their close family over the past decade or more.
Somali Human Rights defenders call on all the government institutions -- and members of civil society -- to commit themselves to actively uphold these rights, which are grounded in both international law, the Islamic religione and traditional Somali cultural values.
