President Abdullahi Yusuf of Somalia has a chest infection and is undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
His doctor, Dr Mauro Saio, said Yusuf was taken to the hospital shortly after midday, Tuesday.
He said the president would fly to London in two days after the check-up.
He, however, did not say if he the trip to London would be official or to seek further treatment.
"He has been coughing and had a chest infection, and he requested a normal check-up before he leaves," said Saio.
But he denied reports that Yusuf was seriously ill.
More than 15 plainclothes police officers kept guard on the first floor of West Wing, where the president was admitted.
When top Somali Government officials received the news, they went to the hospital.
