The tiny north-African country of Djibouti will be opening its first five-star hotel next month, in a move set to push the country further as an international tourist destination.

The country's coastline in some ways is ideal for holiday resorts, with both the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean on its shores.

However, instability in the region and real life pirates still operating on the seas mean Djibouti is still a long way from becoming the next Sharm El Sheikh.

The five-star Djibouti Palace Kempinski hotel is located in a former palace in the country's capital and is set to open on November 6th 2006.

Over 100 staff from hotels across the UAE and Gulf region will to man the Kempinski hotel alongside a local workforce.

Bugra Berberoglu, the hotel's general manager, commented: "The team we are bringing to Djibouti is the largest taskforce team we have ever assembled. . . Our ambition is nothing less than to create the best hotel in Africa."

Current Foreign Office advice for the Djibouti states: "Djibouti shares with the rest of the region a high threat from terrorism. We continue to receive information that you are at risk from terrorist attacks in areas frequented by westerners."
