BUFFALO, N.Y. — Kawiye Jumale escaped civil war in Somalia to come to the United States in 2004.

"We were given the opportunity to start a new life because we came from a life of struggle, a life where every day we had to, it was a fight for survival," said Kawiye Jumale.

Now with Somalia identified as one of the five Muslim-majority nations on the U.S. travel ban, she's worried other refugees won't get the same opportunity she did.

"To hear that people are being stranded and cannot enter a country where there's security, refuge, there's a chance to start over and be better than what we previously had, it' s a shame, it's a disappointment and it's a disgrace," said Jumale.

Jumale joined members of the New York Immigration Coalition Thursday at Catholic Charities, condemning the U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding President Trump's 2017 executive order banning travelers from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

"The Muslim ban is nothing more than a reversion to old immigrant quota systems where people were solely denied entry into our country based on their race religion or nationality," said Karen Andolina Scott, Journeys End Refugee Services. "We thought that that had been relegated to the dust bin of our history, but we were wrong."

"Most of us here, Jamilah, myself and Mohammed, have been here most of our lives. We still have family members who want to join us," said Mohammed Albanna of ACCESS of WNY. "None of them, none of them pose a national security threat."

"This has created havoc, truly havoc, in many families. And not only havoc but also angst, anger and rage in Muslim families within our borders and outside our borders," said Khalid Qazi, MD., Muslim Public Affairs Council of WNY.

Chief Justice John Roberts, in his majority opinion, said the president was acting within his authority when he signed the executive order and that his anti-Islamic rhetoric during his campaign would not be considered.

Meantime the coalition says they'll continue to fight against the ruling and for rights of all immigrants and refugees.
