UN REPRESENTATIVE FOR SOMALI MEETS SOMALI DELEGATION IN LONDON

On Saturday, 23rd October, 2004 a delegation of Senior Somali representatives, led by Mr. Abdi M Nassir and Ms Nina Ludgate Elmi, met with Ambassador Winston Tubman, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special representative to Somalia, at Claridges Hotel, London.
Ambassador Tubman debriefed the meeting on the latest situation regarding the new Somali government led by President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.
He had a clear message, "We must all believe that this government will work.  If Somalis worldwide support the new President, we can, as a whole, help the success of the government locally.  We need stability and security to prevail in the first instance. If troops go into Somalia, they will not be fighting but assisting in keeping law and order."

Ambassador Winston Tubman has been praised by UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for his work over the last 2 years during the IGAD Conference that culminated in the election of the President.  Tubman understands the requirements of the Somali country as a whole and has very good ideas and advice to give to President Yusuf Ahmed.

Somalis can rely on him to give them good representation to the new government and guidance on the way forward.
It will work if all those Somalis who are educated, offer their knowledge back in Somalia.  There will be many jobs in the civil service and businesses in the future which can be filled by Somalis who are currently scattered worldwide and have gained invaluable knowledge.

Two months ago the UN published a request that trained Somalis in the Diaspora offer their services as teachers, doctors, business people, etc. return to Somalia for a few months to assist in rebuilding the country.

Somalia has the backing of many international countries at this time, with offers of assistance in many forms.  The Somali people must support their new government and take this chance to put their country back on the international map as a new born nation in the 21st Century.
