Last July, the President of Ethiopia's Somali state, Mustafe Omar, announced that his administration would create a buffer zone inside Somalia to prevent al-Shabab militants from entering Ethiopia.

During that month, al Shabaab attacked two villages near the border with Ethiopia, killing 17 people, including three civilians and Ethiopian police officers inside Somali territory, while 63 of its fighters were killed.

In July, Ethiopian security forces successfully repelled an Al-Shabaab incursion into its territory that involved about 500 al-Shabab fighters. Officials believe the attack was the militant group’s biggest-ever operation inside Ethiopia.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister and his delegation toured various centers where local government agencies operate and a large house under construction for the parliament.
